When designing logos, I spend a great amount of time sketching—a pen-to-paper brainstorming session— before hitting the computer. I especially enjoy creating custom lettering for logos, as well as creating illustrative imagery. When I’m happy with my sketches, then, I start creating on the computer.
At first, I display logos to clients only in black and white. It is important that the client does not choose a logo concept based on personal color preference and focuses, rather on the form and shape of the logo.
“A logo is a flag, a signature, an escutcheon, a street sign. A logo does not sell (directly), it identifies. A logo is rarely a description of a business. A logo derives meaning from the quality of the thing it symbolizes, not the other way around. A logo is less important than the product it signifies; what it represents is more important than what it looks like. The subject matter of a logo can be almost anything.”

Posada La Cigala is located on the main sandy street of the small private Island, Los Roques, Venezuela.
My friends and hosts, Enrique and Liana Ducournau have been making Los Roques their home for nearly 15 years. Their love for this special place, and respect for its delicate balance, is reflected in the way they share their home and welcome their guests.
For over the past eleven years, I had the opportunity to work as a lead Art Director at Crate and Barrel, a leading contemporary furniture and housewares retailer. With over one hundred stores in the US and nine other countries, Crate and Barrel brands also include the CB2 and Hudson Grace home furnishing companies.
In addition to many corporate print and digital design responsibilities, I developed numerous logos for sub-brands and events.
Chicago Tennis Patrons offers grants and scholarships to support tennis programs for children who might otherwise not have the opportunity to develop their talents and potential.
A couple of years ago, Crate and Barrel welcomed their closest vendors to the North and Clybourn store for an exclusive evening in appreciation of their longstanding partnerships. The event showcased an underlying Parisian nod to acknowledge the brand’s newest partnership with Le Creuset and the introduction of the Le Creuset Bisto 115 (store number).
The plan was to open Le Creuset Bistro in other stores. Unfortunately, it only lasted 6 months, and its no longer open. For all 6 months, Le Creuset sales when through the roof! What a great experience that was.
I was responsible for the Graphic look and feel of the Bistro. The concept was to create a brand for a modern and slick French Bistro, that still felt friendly and approachable. The inspiration for the font was taken from the original Crate and Barrel logotype. Stenciled letters on the outside wall of the first store in Old Town Chicago.
